Malini Subramaniam is an independent journalist covering news from Bastar. After a brief training in journalism she worked in the development sector for over twenty years to return to journalism in 2015. She has primarily covered news for Scroll.in to reflect the extent of human rights violation taking place in an ‘undeclared conflict’ place like Bastar. Having borne the brunt of reporting like several regional journalists from the place, she also now focusses on the difficulties of working as regional stringers/reporters, especially from remote districts and towns. She is the recipient of 2016 International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists, New York and the 2017 Oxfam-Novib/PEN International Freedom of Speech and Expression.
